Songs to Wake the Children in the Morning

Image
People don't really enjoy getting up in the morning, unless you're a kid on Christmas Morning. Alas, leaving your nice, comfortable bed is a necessary evil when it comes to living and functioning in the world. I have to do it. I don't enjoy it, but I have to do it. I wake up with just enough time to sip some coffee before I make my way around the house to wake up cherubs for the bus. Sometimes they make it, sometimes they don't make it. You never know. Our morning is always full of surprises. Lovie wakes up later (much later) than the rest of the cherubs. Like everyone else in the house, I knock on her door to check on her and make sure she is ready to begin the glorious day. In these heady days of smartphones, home devices, and other forms of smart technology, you would think one of my children would know enough to set an alarm so they can be up and at 'em in the morning. Actually, there is one person besides me who does that. The Boy dutifully sets his alarm in t...

Letting your Children Cook a Meal (With a Secret Ingredient)

Image
Dinner is served.  A fun thing at my house is when the children cook dinner. It's fun for them because they get to try a new chore and cook something they know they'll enjoy. It's fun for me because I get a night off from cooking. Dishes? Probably not, but I do get a night off from cooking. Sometimes the cherubs cook using ingredients that are already in the house, other times I'm driving children to the store to procure the necessary ingredients. There was one specific day The Oppressed wanted to make dinner. This was an interesting proposition, since The Oppressed is a vegetarian. I, a proud and eager carnivore, was a little apprehensive as to what my youngest daughter may be planning for that night's meal. Buying (and Paying for) the Groceries The shopping list with the "secret ingredient". The menu of the evening required a trip to the grocery store. As a stay-at-home parent, this didn't faze me. I'm at the grocery store almost every day. This ...

Our Pets. A Cat and a Dog

Image
Our house is filled with tiny, innocent creatures. Some have two legs, some have four. Each of these little treasures bring their own joys and challenges. You've read plenty about the challenges posed by the humans. You've also read about the adventures that come with the animals (the four-legged ones). Here's a little more about the pets in our happy home. Kitty Our cat came first. We got her about five years ago and kept her in what was the office at the time. She was a kitten, and we didn't want her to feel overwhelmed by seeing the entire house. She had a little cat apartment, and Kitty was content to sleep on the "top floor" of the apartment and walk around the room, seeing what was there and meowing "Hello" to anyone who dropped by to check on her. There was an anxious moment when we first got Kitty. I was cooking dinner one night and I happened to set off the smoke alarm as I normally do when cooking. (Side note: I don't burn anything. Th...

More Time on the Road with Kids

There was a lot of travelling for me one week. I needed to take the Gaggle here, there, and back there again. I didn't mind doing it. It allowed me to do some sightseeing around town and get some quality time with them. Our travels for the first part of the week took us to Fall River , where the Gaggle would be spending the day. I stayed down there, thinking it would make more sense than to drive, drive back up, and then drive back down to Fall River to pick them up and then go back home again. Plus, it would give me a chance to walk around and see what the area had to offer. New Bedford I chose to spend my first day in neighboring New Bedford . I took The Boy and The Oppressed to the Whaling Museum a long time ago, and I thought it would be fun to check it out again. It was. It wasn't the same walking around the museum without the younger children. I walked around and looked at the art that hung on the walls. In the middle of my art appreciation, I heard a school class c...

Welcome to the Madness

Hello there, Daddies (and Mommies). Thanks for stopping by and checking things out. I'm Greg and, like you, I have children. Our lives aren't very different, you know. We take our kids to school, pick them up, go shopping for things we hope they will eat, make meals they probably won't, and somehow try to keep everyone alive and maintain our sanity. You and I both know it's not always easy. If you ask our children, though, they won't understand what's so hard. That's why I decided to write about my time at home with the little people I call the Miracles of Christ. I call them this because it's a miracle they're alive after everything I've put them through. Lovingly tucked away in this site is stories of children who have survived practices, school, homework, chores, even (God forbid) an occasional walk. It's not always easy around here, but we somehow manage to survive life in these crazy times. Okay, enough about all that. Meet the family. ...
