"Ahab's Parables" |
Growing up, we learn about navigating our way through life. There are some times when we have help along the way, and there are some times when we must brave it on our own. There are lessons to be learned as we grow up. These lessons may not be easy ones, but they make life easier as we get older.
Learning can take place in different ways and in different places. The most obvious place where children learn is in school. Here, they learn academic skills. Children learn to read, write, math skills. As they progress, they learn geography and foreign languages. They're also going to learn social skills. These skills will be learned in the schoolyard at recess or in the classroom during different scenarios.
The Advantages of Reading
- Reading let's you spend time together.
- Reading to your child helps them learn to read.
- Reading can teach lessons that can be applied to everyday life.
Children read in school. Some will love it, and some will find it to be a drag. Reading will open new worlds to everyone, children and adults alike. I have mentioned before that I enjoy reading to The Boy and there have been many books and stories we have shared.
Reading to your children has many advantages. First, it's time you get to spend together. You also help your child learn to read while you are reading to them. There are also lessons that can be plucked from what you read. These lessons can be applied to daily life.
Ahab's Parables
Alexander Arbour has taken the lessons he has learned and shared them with the world in the form of a book for children to read. His book, "Ahab's Parables", teaches children about doing their best, being honest, showing respect, and other attributes to learn and nurture as they grow up. "Ahab's Parables" draw inspiration from the characters and adventures in Moby Dick.

The rules aboard the Pequod are simple. |
In his book, Alexander invites readers aboard the Pequod to meet the crew. There are members that you will enjoy meeting and talking to. There are members you should be cautious of when you hear their tales. Some of the people you meet will be trustworthy souls. Others like to spin tall tales. Some do it for entertainment purposes, and some will try to deceive you.
It's something you learn when you leave the world of books and venture out into the physical world. There will be people who are trustworthy, people who will knowingly embellish stories to make them more interesting, and people who will try to pull the wool over your eyes. You'll be able to see them coming, but not always. I try to teach my children to be honest and not mislead people. We all try to teach our children to be the best version of themselves. Hopefully, we all spend our lives trying to be the best people we can be.

Exploring different ports can be exciting. |
When you travel to different places, you meet people who will help you find your way around. You should do the same when new people come to your town and neighborhood. It's always good when you can help someone out and make their lives easier.
But getting to these ports isn't always easy. The seas, like life, can be treacherous. You need to navigate your way through obstacles and challenges. Sometimes the weather won't cooperate. Sometimes it will get foggy. It's best to stop and rest, to let the fog break. listen for the foghorns of the other ships to help you navigate your way when the path isn't clear. Teaching about knowing when to push ahead and when to stop and rest is important. It's advice that can be valuable for children and adults alike.
Making a Classic Accessible to Children

Life isn't always easy. |
Reading with your children can be fun. I enjoy reading with The Boy. There can be subtle lessons in the books we read. Of course, that's not why I read to him. I read to him because he likes reading. The stories are interesting and enjoyable. Maybe he gets a little something extra out of it. If he does, that's a bonus. "Ahab's Parables" is a fun book to read. Children will get a head start on a piece of literature, and they will be able to relate to the stories and lessons in the book. Adults will be able to relive a book they may have read earlier in their lives and see the story from a different perspective.
Alexander Arbour made a classic accessible to children. He also introduced life skills we have been trying to teach our little ones. Reading is fun. Adventure is fun. Being ale to help your child navigate their way through the storms of life isn't always easy, but maybe reading a book together will make it manageable.
