Is this a Christmas Movie?
There has been a lot of debate about “Die Hard”, and whether it is a Christmas movie. I personally think it is. The point of this post, however, is not to give my explanations why. Instead, I would like to highlight some other movies that could be debated just as fervently regarding their status as a Christmas movie.
Batman Returns
This installment of an earlier franchise depiction features Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader. This movie pits Batman against Catwoman, the Penguin, and a double-crossing industrialist. Throughout the movie, Bruce Wayne dates Selina Kyle while trying to keep Gotham City safe from this chapter's offering of villains as Batman. As the movie progresses, Wayne and Kyle find out who the other really is, complicating their relationship.
Lethal Weapon
I’m not sure I’ve heard arguments as intense as “Diehard”, and I surprised there hasn’t been the same debate. Everyone knows the story of the franchise’s maiden voyage. A veteran cop is partnered with a loose cannon, a “lethal weapon” as the police department’s psychiatrist puts it. The veteran, Roger Murtaugh, is just trying to do his job and make it home alive to see his family. New partner Martin Riggs doesn’t mind if he doesn’t make it alive as he has no family and nothing to live for in his opinion. It’s a story of inner conflict and potential redemption as two detectives try to keep the streets of Los Angeles safe so citizens can have a happy and safe Christmas.
Reindeer Games
This movie doesn’t exactly give “feel-good” vibes. Then again, you wouldn’t expect that from a film where a recently released convict is caught up in a casino heist. Rudy Duncan wants to go home, eat pie, and watch football with his father. It seems like the perfect way to celebrate release from prison during the holiday season. Ashley and her “brother”, Gabriel, have other plans, and Rudy would be well-advised to go along with their plans if he wants to live to see Christmas, let alone get home and see his family. “Reindeer Games” features the themes of family, togetherness, reunion, and being home for the holidays. You just have to survive to get there.
Is it a Christmas Movie?
Arguments for and against considering "Die Hard" a Christmas movie are numerous. I wanted to add these films to the mix and get your opinion on the same question with a different movie. If you have other movies that you feel deserve the same consideration, feel free to comment. Merry Christmas!
